Alpaca and Llama
Alpacas and Llamas are evolved from the camel family, and originated high in the Andes Mountains of South America. In New Zealand the most common forms of Camelid, as they are known, are the Alpaca and the Llama.
In their native South America they were used for almost everything - clothing, food, companionship and transport. In New Zealand, Llamas are found largely in trekking ventures, carrying your baggage for you.
Bred for their extremely fine and expensive fibre, Alpacas are to be found on homestays and small lifestyle farms. They are also farmed because they are delightful, intelligent and inquisitive companions.
This summary was prepared with the assistance of Nick Cooper, President, NZ Alpaca and Llama Association.
