Background Information for the Collection of the Food and Beverage Stocktake Data

Copy of the request to Chief Executives:

Stocktake 1: Government programmes

Objective: To identify those government programmes that may assist sectors develop their own strategies and plans for sustainable economic growth.

This stocktake is focused on the pots of funds and services as opposed to the initiatives that are funded within those pots. The pots or services need not specifically target the Food and Beverage Sector, but could potentially assist the sector achieve their goals. It is hoped that the resulting resource may assist engagements with other sectors in the future.

For example, the MAF Sustainable Farming Fund provides funding for a wide array of initiatives that impact on the primary agriculture sector. In this example, Stocktake 1 is interested in capturing details about the Sustainable Farming Fund rather than the initiatives funded under that pot.

Alternatively, the "Biz" programme is a specialist business information service for small to medium businesses. We anticipate that such generic services would be captured in Stocktake 1.

Stocktake 2: Targeted Food & Beverage Sector Initiatives

Objective: Identifying the current and/or recent government initiatives that target the Food and Beverage Sector.

This stocktake is focused on the initiatives funded under broader pots of government funding and services that are specifically targeted at the Food and Beverage sector. We are interested in initiatives that are underway and/or may have been recently completed, i.e. completed since 1 July 2003.

For example, the Food Hawke's Bay food industry cluster initiative is funded under the NZTE Major Regional Initiatives Fund. In this example, Stocktake 2 is interested in capturing details about Food Hawke's Bay rather than the Major Regional Initiatives Fund. The initiative falls under a wider government programme and is specifically targeted at the Food and Beverage Sector.
