International Trade
In additional to the more general agricultural perspective, MAF is also using our understanding of the structure of agricultural industries overseas, as part of the argument to reduce trade restrictions. For example, we have drawn attention to the pluriactivity of agricultural producers. While many farmers overseas earn little from their agricultural commodities, they have other sources of income which could and should reduce their dependence on state support.
Trade policy has tended to focus on the economics of production. Our role has been to encourage a broader focus which directs the attention of policy makers to the social context of farming, and introduces concepts such as involving a greater range of stakeholders in policy processes to achieve the outcome required.
