1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Study Aims

The purpose of this study is to review the literature on social and economic impacts of recent exotic forest development on rural communities in New Zealand and prepare recommendations for the research required to establish a base for analysis of social and economic impacts currently and in the future.

1.2 Study Brief

The purpose of this scoping study is to identify the information available since 1980 on the social and economic impacts.

Questions to be addressed in the study are:

  1. What reports have been produced since 1980 in New Zealand which describe social and economic impacts of plantation forestry development? Research projects and studies, unpublished and published reports will be reviewed.
  1. What statistical information is available which can be used in assessing rural community social and economic impacts due to forest development? Information will be reviewed for
  • employment trends and workforce in the development of new forest areas.
  • forest estate size, distribution, new development including small holdings, woodlots and plantations, restocking and land bank to be planted.
  • farm land conversions for forestry since 1980.
  1. What further research is required to describe social and economic impacts of forestry in rural New Zealand communities?

The study will be presented as Part 1 Literature Review - this report - and, forthcoming, date unavailable, Part 2 Statistical Sources.
