SUPPLEMENTARY FEEDING

Amounts used

There was a substantial increase in the amount of supplementary feeds during the snow year of 1992. Part of the increase was due to the dry autumn creating shortages of feed in winter that exacerbated the effect of snow. Conventional square hay bales showed the biggest increase - (73.5%), transportability being a major factor for its widespread use. Round bales, silage and grain showed similar increases (23 - 44%) with almost a four-fold increase in the amount of sheepnuts used. The area of brassica used remained relatively static.
