FARMER SURVEY
Due to the severe impact of the 1992 snows on livestock throughout the East Coast of the South Island, MAF Policy with the co-operation of Federated Farmers, surveyed farmers from Waiau to the Fairlie basin. The objectives were to see what could be learned from the snows and to seek their suggestions on how to minimise livestock losses in future snows.
DEPTH OF SNOW
In the July snow, depths averaged 1m at higher altitudes but there was little drifting. Blizzard conditions in the August snow caused drifts of up to 30m on Banks Peninsula and 20m in Inland Waiau.
