Strategic Overview:

This section summarises the global and domestic challenges shaping MAF's operating environment and details its response to those challenges.

Sustainable Development

Our future prosperity is dependent on our natural environment and how we use and manage our natural resources. As a small country whose trade-dependent economy is driven by its exports, our agriculture, horticulture, food and forestry industries are a vital part of our future. The primary sector should be at the core of any attempts to lift New Zealand's economic growth rate and standard of living.

The success of the primary sector is driven by adding value to our natural resources. These natural resources and innovation within the sector are at the heart of New Zealand's comparative advantage. To ensure ongoing prosperity for current and future generations we need to make sure our natural resources are protected against over exploitation, and today's prosperity is not at the expense of tomorrow's. We need to manage our resources in a way that is sustainable.

The global trading environment is increasingly driven by consumer demands and changing social values. The primary sector's ability to compete in international markets depends on being able to meet these demands through improved sustainable use of natural resources, animal welfare, improved product safety and surety and, above all, an increase in innovation and productivity.

As a sustainable development agency, MAF will contribute to a future where we, as New Zealanders, celebrate dynamic, scientifically sophisticated and prosperous agriculture, horticulture, food and forestry industries, leading growth and innovation in the economy.
