Declaration of the Responsible Minister and the Director-General
This Statement of Intent documents what Government expects of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) in 2003/ 04. Further, it sets out the strategic context for the Ministry, the Key Government Goals to which the Ministry contributes, and the specific outcomes that the Ministry will deliver over the next three to five years.
The agriculture, horticulture, forestry and food sectors have a key role to play in New Zealand s future prosperity. Innovation and productivity gains leading to sustainable global competitiveness of our primary products are essential if we are to achieve the nation s growth ambitions. MAF's role is to create opportunities for, and manage risk within these sectors. This involves fostering market access for primary products and being the recognised competent authority for sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) purposes. Additionally, the Ministry must continue to advocate vigorously for the infrastructure, institutions and the organisational structures that will enable the agriculture, horticulture, forestry and food sectors to take advantage of hard-won trade access, thereby realising the sectors pre-- eminent place in a successful future New Zealand economy.
Relevant sections of the 2003/ 04 Statement of Intent have been agreed with the Minister for Food Safety.
