Laws Governing Police to be Overhauled

The law governing the police is to be reviewed and rewritten, in an overhaul that will touch on most police operations. The review will look into issues such as governance, human resources and public input into policing priorities. A code of conduct for police will also be developed. The review will consider the findings of the Commission of Inquiry into Police Conduct, which was sparked by claims that police mishandled rape complaints made against their colleagues. There will be a public consultation phase over the next year and a new Police Act is likely to be introduced to Parliament at the start of 2008.
