"Airshed" Maps

The Ministry for the Environment (MfE) has for the first time published a series of maps identifying the locations of forty two "airsheds" throughout the country. Airsheds are those areas, designated by local authorities, in which air pollution levels are likely to exceed the Ministry's national air quality regulations, introduced in October 2004.

The regulations aim to minimise breaches of the air quality standards by 2013. Between now and then, MfE is requiring an annual improvement in air quality within the airsheds. After 2013, no resource consents will be granted to discharge smoke and soot if an air quality standard is still being breached.
