2005 NZ's Fourth Warmest on Record...

Last year was NZ's fourth warmest on record. The 2005 Climate Summary from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) shows an average national temperature of 13.1oC. This compares with 13.3oC in 1999 - the warmest recorded. NIWA says the year was dominated by more anticyclones and less wind than average, and produced the sixth-warmest winter since records began in the 1860s. 2005 was also marked by tornadoes, hail, fog, an unseasonably late snow storm and floods in the Bay of Plenty, in contrast with very low rainfall in the South Island.
