New Gambling Commission Has Busy First Year
The new Gambling Commission ruled on 19 casino applications in its first year of operation. The commission was established under the Gaming Act and has been operating since last June as an independent appeal body dealing with public and industry complaints.
Its report for the year to June 30 2005 says the commission had dealt with a broad range of applications from casino licence holders and appeals from gaming machine operators. Applications ranged from changed layouts to changing designations for gambling areas. Apart from making the 19 casino decisions the commission decided on two appeals from gaming machine operators.
The report included information about the casinos: Auckland had 110 tables and 1647 gaming machines, Christchurch 35 and 506 respectively, Hamilton 23 and 339, Dunedin 12 and 180, Skycity in Queenstown 12 and 86 and Wharf in Queenstown 6 and 74.
