Record Low Drownings Toll In 2005
A record low of 103 people drowned in NZ waters in 2005. The figure, released by Water Safety NZ, is 17 less than 2004 and 18 less than the average for the last five years. However, dramatic increases in drownings were reported in Waikato, up 11 percent, and Marlborough, where the toll increased four-fold. Rivers are still the number one site for drownings, with 25 percent of all fatalities occurring in a river last year.
