Proposed Changes to Drivers Licence System; Have Your Say

Land Transport NZ (LTNZ) has released for consultation its Draft Rule to change the older driver licensing system, including dropping the compulsory on-road driving test for drivers over 80.

The new system would include the following components:

  • no mandatory age-based older driver test;
  • a Medical Certificate for Driver Licence would still be required to relicense at ages 75 and 80, and two-yearly thereafter;
  • retention of the existing medical referral process whereby GPs can seek specialist medical assessments of driver licensing applicants; and
  • the putting in place of an education and information package for older people, their families and communities, including expansion of the Safe with Age classroom road safety course, and a subsidy for Safe with Age graduates who wish to further improve their on-road driving skills with a private driving instructor.

The new law is expected to come into effect in December 2006. Until then older drivers must pass the on-road driving test.

Submissions close on 28 February 2006. All of the relevant information, along with details about how you can make a submission, can be found at: http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/
