Energy Sustainability Policies: Analysis
An analysis of the government's energy sustainability policies has concluded that significant gaps exist in the understanding of energy use (especially in the transport sector) and in what motivates consumer behaviour. In a report (Cabinet Paper: Sustainable Energy Report-Back) the Ministry of Economic Development says there is "much more to learn about the nature of energy demand and supply options facing New Zealand, and how decisions are made". The essential areas in which quality information was needed were:
- the effectiveness of particular policies (how well they are working, and the contribution they are making to desired objectives);
- how to encourage best practice in energy use; and
- the policy implications of changes taking place in markets and the technology and other factors that drive them.
