Towards Safeguarding New Zealand's Agriculture Biodiversity
![]()
New Zealand has ratified the 1992 United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). In line with its obligations under this agreement New Zealand has developed and is implementing its own National Biodiversity Strategy. The CBD places emphasis on sustainable food production and is developing agriculture and forestry work plans. In these plans it has identified key areas vital to implementing sustainable food production. These are:
- pollinators;
- soil biota;
- integrated land management and farming systems management; and
- sustainable forestry
Funamental to balancing sustainable use of biodiversity and its conservation is the management of the whole ecosystem.
To meet CBD case study requirements and assess where New Zealand is at with regard to the CBD agriculture and forestry work plan, MAF commissioned Ecosystems Ltd. to compile:
- a database of 6,720 relevant research abstracts (predominately New Zealand) on the key subjects above; and
- a report titled "Towards Safeguarding New Zealand's Agricultural Biodiversity: Research gaps, Priorities and Potential Case Studies."
