Crown Research Institutes (CRIs)
CRIs were created in 1992 as government-owned scientific businesses governed by their own act. They are centred on certain sectors and provide research services on behalf of government for those sectors and the NZ public. They carry out a mix of government and privately funded research and development:
- Agresearch - www.agresearch.co.nz - a life sciences organisation with three broad R&D areas: creating new biotechnology-based food industries; clean green food industries; and a healthy safe environment.
- HortResearch - www.hortresearch.co.nz - provides R&D services to all levels of the horticultural industry. Research is focused on improving horticultural crops, environment, plant genomics and bioactives.
- Crop & Food Research - www.crop.cri.nz - provides research and technology to NZ and international producers in the following areas: arable and vegetable foods, ornamentals, animal feed, plant products and forestry.
- Forest Research - www.scionresearch.com - provides research and technology solutions to all levels of the forest and wood products industries. Its research covers the main areas of manufacturing technologies, sustainability and risk, and future forests.
- Landcare Research - www.landcareresearch.co.nz - focuses on the management of land resources for conservation and primary production. Research covers developing sustainable land use systems, managing pests, maintaining environmental quality and conserving species.
- Geological & Nuclear Sciences (GNS) - www.gns.cri.nz - specialists in earth and isotope scientific research and consultancy services. GNS's main activities include identifying and managing geological resources; understanding the physical and socio-economic effects of natural hazards; developing isotope technologies for a wide range of sectors; and understanding NZ's evolution and past environments.
- Industrial Research (IRL) - www.irl.cri.nz - IRL works with a range of industry sectors with an emphasis on advanced technologies in the manufacturing, processing, bio-pharmaceutical and energy sectors. Technologies are also developed which benefit the horticultural, agricultural and forestry sectors.
- The National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research (NIWA) - www.niwa.co.nz - aims to provide a scientific basis for the sustainable management and development of NZ's atmospheric, marine and freshwater systems and their associated resources. Main areas of research: atmosphere and climate; freshwater, marine and coastal studies; fisheries and aquaculture and fisheries enhancement.
- Institute of Environmental Science & Research (ESR) - www.esr.cri.nz - provides research services relating to public health, environmental health and forensic science. Main areas of research include water quality, food safety, population and environmental health, communicable disease and forensic examination.

Polytechs and Institutes of Technology
There are 21 polytechs and Institutes of Technology in NZ that offer certificate, diploma and degree courses in a variety of subjects related to science and technology such as building, engineering, agriculture, forestry and viticulture. Some polytechs also carry out research.
Research Associations
Research associations are non-governmental industry-linked research institutions. They provide capabilities in research and technology transfer which individual companies in the sector may not be able to manage. Some also receive government research funding.
